Raymond’s classes get you so warm that you can really let loose and dance away in the centre! His barre is simple and really warms up and aligns the body. I find it’s almost a holistic approach he takes and he really cares about each and every individual, which is incredibly important. I’ve been taking Raymond’s classes for the past 6 years and I highly recommend them. He’s an experienced and fantastic teacher!!
Sarah Kundi (English National Ballet, ex- Northern Ballet Theatre and Ballet Black)
Raymond’s classes are always enjoyable and satisfying with the focus as much on performance as technique. His humour, light temperament and nuggets of knowledge mean the class is both fun and challenging.
As a choreographer Raymond’s movement is beautiful to dance, he is never demanding or difficult but inspiring and enthusiastic, giving you confidence to create with him. He is a pleasure to work with.
Carrie Taylor Johnson (New Adventures, ex- Birmingham Royal Ballet, ex- Deutsche Oper und Ballett am Rhein, ex- Phantom of the Opera)
Raymond is a truly passionate and inspiring teacher. He cares about every dancer, knowing what each one of us need. His talent is to be able to give guidance that allows you to develop not only technically but your individuality as an artist. The opportunity to work with Raymond and perform his piece was a very special experience indeed. It was admirable how he translated his idea into movement. He always encouraged us to explore the movement and make it our own but with the guidance necessary to make sense of it, paying attention to every little detail.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with such passion and positive energy, and seeing possibilities and potential in me that I never thought was there.
Melanie Lopez (Ballett Hagen, ex- Peter Shauffuss Ballet, Ballet Ireland, Javier de Frutos)
Raymond gives inspiring energy at every class! I commute 4 hours for an opportunity to take his class and it is always worth it! His classes are a treat because he encourages artistry while refining technique. Always uplifting, always rewarding, always motivating.
Merritt Moore (ex – Boston Ballet, Zurich Ballet)
Raymond’s classes are fluid and dynamic…he brings classical ballet in the context of the 21st century…I can improve my technique and reinforce my individuality as a mature dancer
Beatrix Pasquale (ex-Zaragoza Ballet)
Raymond Chai’s class is perfectly designed to enable dancers (both students and professionals) to work within the structure of the ballet format whilst enhancing the dancer’s artistic/choreographic needs. I have benefited tremendously from his eye, ranging from more classical demands to my needs as a contemporary dancer. His class work for contemporary based companies is excellent. Current and relevant, with an emphasis on the use of dynamics. An understanding of the back and shifts of weight allows for a range of motion in movement. There is reference to the rigour of classicism that liberates the body in space through a contemporary sensibility. Brilliant.
Mavin Khoo (Artistic Director of ZFin Malta Dance Ensemble, also solo performer and rehearsal director with Akram Khan Company)
Raymond was Chief Ballet Master for Ballet Black for 11 years and during that time he helped transform Ballet Black into the professional company it is today, through discipline, attention to detail and truly caring about the dancers and company.
As a teacher on our Associate Programme, Raymond has a very loyal following and has helped us to establish a strong reputation for excellent professional classes.
